I have developed a free piece of software that attempts to give the user the best of both worlds re: low sensitivity (accurate aiming) vs high sensitivity (easy to look around large amounts).

 

It works like this:

 

Under normal operation (Mouse kept on mat), it does not affect anything, but if you lift the mouse *whilst it is in motion*, it keeps moving the mouse cursor until you place the mouse back on the mat.

 

The upshot is that you can "roll" or "spin" the mouse like a trackball to generate the large mouse movements (eg a 180deg turn), allowing you to keep the sensitivity low for high accuracy.

There is no "install", it's just a portable EXE. It does not alter any windows settings or change anything on your PC. Source code is available for the paranoid / curious.

Could it be marked as a cheat by VAC or another anticheat system? Have you tried it yourself on vac-secured games?

No, I have not personally tried it with any VAC games.  

 

I do not see however how valve could consider it a cheat - AFAIK the Steam Controller uses basically the same technique to let you use it's trackpad as a trackball.

 

Obviously code could flag it as a 3rd-party app, I just mean that what it is doing is not any more "cheaty" that what their own controller is doing.  

 

If anyone does try it with a VAC game and it works, I would appreciate them letting me know. I would also be willing to try a VAC game myself to see what happens - any suggestions for a free VAC enabled game?

Team Fortress 2 is free and has VAC enabled. But you know this might take forever before it bans you. If it's considered a cheat of course.

Seems legit to me but I don't play games with anti-cheat mechanisms so I don't really care either way.

I think that's quite a good idea, It might take some getting used to but would be something interesting to try out!

It would feel weird... and I don't really see the benefit. In the end, when you actually shoot a target you still have to control your mouse. Guess if you didn't have very much room on your desk this could help.

It's not mainly intended for traditional FPS.

Try it in a game where you do NOT rotate as quick as your mouse moves - eg controlling Torso Twist in Mechwarrior Online, or controlling a tank turret in BattleField.

yeah that could be very helpful, I hate negative acceleration
