Matching FoV

Hi guys,

 

in order to keep the same sensitivity i have to ask why we match the vertical FoV. Is it not better to match the horizontal FoV cause you use your mouse much more horizontal?

I know in some games you cant change the vertical FoV like Csgo but in other titles you can set the vertical FoV to your liking.

So for example you play 16:9 in battlefield and want to match the FoV from 4:3 Csgo.

We know csgo is ~74 vertical and 90 horizontal FoV on a 4:3 resolution

Now you cant set in battlefield ~74 vertical and get ~106 horizontal FoV  or you set 59 vertical and get 90 horizontal FoV on a 16:9 resolution.

 

Iam trying to match my FoV on all games on laptop,desktop and aspect ratio to the same. Is matching the FoV horizontal a good idea?

That is not matching the FOV, everything will be completely different. The only correct match is ~74 vertical.

It doesn't matter which axis you match as long as you use the same FOV Type. The calculator will tell you what config FOV is correct to get the FOV you want.

The most accurate solution is to use the FOV Type and value from the game you want to match everything to. If it's CSGO, set the Auto FOV to 90 Hdeg 4:3, and it will automatically tell you the closest config FOV for any game you select 👍

IMO it makes way more sense to use the vertical FOV at all times. This is because the standard convention now is to use Hor+ FOV scaling in games, meaning no matter what aspect ratio you choose, the vertical FOV stays the same.

It doesn't make sense to be changing your sensitivity just because you got a wider monitor - think about this, let's say some company brought out a huge wrap-around monitor that curved around you 90 degrees each side. Would you then want to increase your sens for aiming at targets in the centre drastically due to the now extremely high horizontal FOV value? Of course not, you'd want it not affected in the slightest.

You can, but if you are converting between different aspect ratios it's a bit different, then it matters. Look at it this way, if you want to convert from a 4:3 monitor to a 16:9, the most consistent way is to keep the 4:3 portion of the 16:9 monitor the same as on the 4:3 monitor, so you just add a bit of extra width, like this:

This is a personal preference, but most aspects of the view and sensitivity are a bit more consistent by doing it like this.

This works because the rendered image of 90° (horizontal 4:3) on a 24.5" monitor, is equivalent to ~95.56° (horizontal 4:3) fov on a 27" monitor, which is a magnification change of 27/24.5, the same change as the change in cursor speed.

(360 arctan(27/24.5 * tan((90 * pi/180)/2)))/pi = ~95.56°

If you go from 90 fov to ~95.56 fov, and scale the sensitivity by the change in magnification (monitor distance 0%), you would go from 0.6 to 0.661224.

If you want to have the 24.5" monitor exactly equivalent to the 27" monitor in camera speed AND rotation distance, you would have to decrease the 24.5" fov, which isn't possible in CS:GO. You would have to drop the FOV to ~ 84.44°.
