Razer Viper, one Month later... + Tiger Arc 2 skates

    Positives:
It's balance is perfect, great balance adds to how light a mouse can feel.
The chord is just as flexible as the model o (great chord!), but fits a bungee better, and, for whatever reason doesn't have the kinks that my model o still has.
Overall the shape feels fantastic,  IMO the model o improved on the Zowie FK1 shape (one of the best), Razer Viper has improved the shape further.
Extremely light, feels very well built, very solid, no creaking or 'squishy sidewalls'. As a bonus the rubber grips on this mouse feel decent, just NOT AS GOOD as proper grips! (I cut my own using tennis over-grip, works great)

    Negatives:
If I need to pick on something, I would say the M1 + M2 buttons aren't as 'clicky' as I'd prefer. This doesn't necessarily  mean it's a bad thing, i'm just used to crispy clicks! My CPS scores were consistently higher than the 'stiffer' clicks on the model o.
As a positive side note to these switches, no more de bounce problems down the track, something that plagues many.

The biggest issue on the mouse was the skates, out of the box mine came with 'sharp' edges, causing 'scratching' on pads like the Zowie GSR SE, they do wear in, but it takes time and a little persuasion (I went around the edge with the back of a pen to 'press' a bevel in).
I've recently installed the Tiger ARC 2 PTFE skates and would recommend you install these ASAP. They look well made with nice rounded edges and a very precise fit. Made from pure PTFE which generally 'polishes' up with use, giving a slicker glide once worn in!

Honestly I never thought I'd praise a Razer product as much as I am right now, out of the 17 mice i've been through over the last couple years I can genuinely say this is my favourite!

Thanks for reading, look forward to hearing your experiences!

I think it depends how you grip, or how you're used to gripping. The fk1+ used to cramp my hand as well, i tried it out after the FK2 and FK1 gave me cramping issues. My hands are 10cm wide, i noticed people with larger hands using FK2's without issue. It's more about grip preference and letting your hand adjust to the shape i think. So far this mouse has not given me any cramps, it seems to have more support for the pinky where the FK did not.

DNAMTE got a reaction from fortunate reee in BEST Mouse? BEST Mouse Pad? NEW! RAZER VIPER
I think a hardware section on this website is a great idea, here is a few ideas on mousepads and mice I use!

First lets talk mouse pads... I've been through a few.. few more then a few. I Use a moderately low sensitivity (~50cm/360) so the size of the pad is important, bigger the better.
In my opinion mouse pad friction should be very consistent, IMO the actual speed of the surface is not as important as its overall consistency. Starting your mouse movement (static friction) and continuing a movement (kinetic friction) ideally would be equal, though this is not possible, I believe the closer they feel the more consistent and reliable the pad will feel.
Adding to that is how the pad material lets your hand/arm slide over it. Some pads in my experience really grab to your hand/arm (Possibly not as much of a problem if your have very dry hands, moisture is the root cause of the problem).

Here's a few I've recently used:    (RED = honourable mention), (GOLD = My top pick)

    - Logitech 640 - 450x400, 3mm thick. This pad is a well made, smooth textured consistent glide retaining lots of control. It shares a lot of similarities with the Zowie GSR, although personally I find this pad doesn't deal with humidity as well and can stop your hand gliding uniformly.
    - ASUS ROG SHEATH - 900x440, 3mm thick. Perfectly flat and VERY fast. Friction is very consistent on the mouse unfortunately this is one of them pads that really tends to lock on to my hand when it gets sweaty, making it feel less consistent overall.
    - BenQ Zowie G-SR - 480x400, 3.5mm thick. Perfectly flat with a somewhat *inconsistent surface speed. *Static friction is really quite high, highest I've tested, coupled with a fairly fast *kinetic friction speed, resulting in a fairly inconsistent experience. On the positive side it's very well made, perfectly flat with a silky smooth high quality feeling texture that allows your hand to glide as well as the mouse. I still rate this pad highly if you get used to the unusual glide.
    - Steelseries Qck+ - 450x400, 2mm thick. Perfectly flat and moderately fast surface speed. Friction is quite balanced on this pad making it feel consistent and reliable. Adding to that my hand has little trouble moving over this pad i rate these pads highly.
    - Razer Gigantus - 455mm square, 5mm thick. Originally i tested this pad and it had what felt like a lumpy under surface (was like an air bubble that seemed to move around. I wrote this pad off and called it a day. Well i decided to give it another go and to my disbelief the 'lump' is nowhere to be found.
Perfectly flat and with similar mouse feel to the Qck pads. Qck possibly a little bit faster. Friction also feels really consistent and reliable. Overall i notice little difference between this and the Qck and rate it highly.
    - Steelseries Qck HEAVY - 450x400, 6mm thick. Read Qck+ but thicker. Despite people saying it uses a different cloth, I've compared them both and they are identical cloths. IMO its a tad too thick.
    - Fnatic Focus G1 XXL - 487x372, 3mm thick. Perfectly flat and second only to the ASUS ROG in terms of surface speed. Friction seems consistent however alike the ASUS (all 'glossy' pads???) as soon as your hand gets a bit sweaty it starts sticking to the pad.
    - Roccat Taito 2017 900x330, 3mm thick. I played with this pad only for a short time. It's not tall enough for me, so I'm trying to source the 370mm tall version (not available in Australia, yet . What I can say though is it really feels like a faster steel series pad. Friction seems consistent and in the short time I used it I never had any problems with it gripping to my hand! When I get the larger version I'll update.
    - Steelseries Qck Extended - 900x400, 4mm thick. Read Qck+ but thicker and wider! Despite people saying it uses a different cloth, I've compared them both and they are identical cloths. This pad is the best thickness out of the range coupled with extra room!
    - ARTISAN Ninja FX Zero  XL  (SOFT foam) - 490x420, 4mm thick - What can i say, this pads quality is #1, sits perfect flat out of the box.
Sub-surface stitched edges, perfectly flat / uniform base, consistent feeling cloth with little friction. Negatives? Firstly the cloth texture is fairly coarse, the coarsest texture of any pad I've tested, something you can adjust to fairly quickly but worth a thought, noticeable if your coming from a pad like the smooth Zowie GSR, it's not a huge problem but the GSR certainly allows your hand to glide better.
Now for my deal breaker, the foam. For me, it's too soft, this is the only pad I've ever had which will cause the mouse to really DIG IN by applying 'excess' pressure to the mouse, i talk more about this on pages 4 & 5.
    - ARTISAN Ninja FX Zero  XL (MID foam) - 490x420, 3mm thick - READ ARTISAN Ninja FX Zero  XL  (SOFT foam) then consider that the foam issue is now gone, this base is great and I've had zero issue with it. My favorite pad right now!
    - HYPER X Fury X 'speed' - 450x400, 3mm thick - First of all lets correct and change the name - HYPER X Fury 'control', it's not faster than the standard Fury X, it's slower. The texture and glide are 'smoother' but it's noticeably slower. Static friction is on the higher end but seems fairly consistent with the general glide and feel of the pad. The smooth texture allows your hand to glide easily, however there is a SLIGHT issue with humidity which seems commonplace amongst 'glossy pads' (Read ASUS ROG SHEATH)
Unlike the Fury X i tested, the base is very flat and consistent which surprised me as I'd assumed they used the same base material, quality control? the stitching however, does not sit flat around the edges even after a month sitting on a flat surface. Overall i didn't mind this pad after getting used to it.
    - HYPER X Fury X -  450x400, 3mm thick -To be honest, this pad ALIKE the Logitech 640 suffered from a 'lumpy' under surface, a GREAT disappointment and likely a quality control issue given the fact that the  HYPER X Fury X 'speed' did not have the issue.
This pad is a slightly faster sibling of the 'speed' version, confusing i know... The texture is more coarse and i believe that's really the only difference, a larger weave of the same material. As we've seen before 'smoother' is not always faster, often less contact points = less friction. I would pick this pad out of the two IF IT HAD A SMOOTH BASE! which it doesn't...
AORUS AMP500 - 430x370, 1.8mm thick - This pad is by far the best pad i've tried for tracking, its glide is second to none, my tracking is more consistent with this surface than any other (i've not tested any hard pads), friction is very consistent making micro adjustment very easy and you never get that 'stuck' feeling.
I'm more comfortable / consistent at target acquisition on a more controlled surface like the ARTISAN Ninja FX Zero XL (MID foam). honestly that could be simply due to more time on that surface, time will tell but ultimately this pad is tied as My favorite pad right now!

    - Zowie FK2
    - Logitech G403 wired
    - Logitech G403 Wireless
    - Logitech G900
    - Steelseries Rival 300

Here's some specifics on my favourites! You can find more feedback on most of the above by looking through the pages of this thread!
Razer Viper - NEW, currently testing! I've only just received this mouse, already love it, consider the Zowie FK 1 & Glorious Model o as predecessors to this. They are all similar in shape, but this mouse LITERALLY does everything better. Better balanced, better grip, better cable, better side button placement and an even better shape. The Geometry of this mouse feels fantastic.
To top it off this mouse feels extremely well built, no flex or creaking and still comes in under 70g.
Glorious MODEL O - Read Zowie FK 1. consider this; it weighs only 67g, better buttons all round, comfort grooves for M1 & M2, better cable, RGB and software allowing DPI steps of 100 and then consider that this shape is slightly better than the FK1, I get no cramping with this mouse and still get a great solid grip.
Steelseries Rival 310 - This mouse has a GREAT shape, the geometry allows a very solid grip. the buttons are all very good, great flexible cable and one of the best gliding mouses I've used. The only negative I can pick is the rubber sides, when your hands are dry they offer amazing grip, coupled with great geometry the mouse is literally locked in place. Perfect. Unfortunately after your hands warm up, any moisture makes the grips very slippery and lets this mouse down. Honestly if this mouse had comfort grooves in the M1/M2 buttons and a similar coating/ grips as the Rival 600 (the grips on the rival 600 almost improve as your hands warm up, the rest of the mouse is coated in an anti slip coating, Great!), this would easily be my top pick.

Zowie FK  1 - Almost as soon as I picked up this mouse I liked it, a lot. You can get a VERY SOLID grip on this shape and ultimately is why it feels so consistent and reliable, no rubber grips and it doesn't need it, the geometry is good enough. The L&R clicks are stiffer than most and take some getting used to and the side buttons / mouse wheel are OK. Great contact pads, glides well.
Great flexible cable and not much to say about the 3310 sensor, works fine, tracks well. Obviously DPI steps are limited to 400, 800, 1600 & 3200. Not really a problem for most. After months of using this mouse the only concern I had was discomfort in my hand as your pinkie finger is generally completely unsupported.

    Any specific questions feel free!

I think this is something lots have wondered about.... high or low... CSGO is much more playable with low sens due to the predictable flow of maps.
Ultimately it takes more skill to be accurate with a faster sens. Slower sens gives you easier accuracy at the loss of movement / manoeuvrability.
Really you need to decide on your gameplay, and be realistic with your skill level. There's some incredibly accurate players using very fast sensitivies.
My highest scores in kovacs aim trainer are with slow sens, but it's not practical in game. Theres always pros and cons, different games weigh up differently.

DNAMTE got a reaction from bryo962 in Need slightly more clarification on monitor distance matching
I've been thinking how I can describe my post in the easiest way possible. Firstly I'd like to start with some basics.

Field of View makes up your view window within a game, this measurement (in degrees) is removed from the remainder of your full rotation (360).

Obviously your screen window is fixed in size. Hence, when we lower our FOV the image is scaled larger, when we increase our FOV the image is scaled smaller, maintaining the overall boundaries of the original view box.

The reason selecting the correct FOV is important, minimize distortion but maintain a reasonable view angle, however that is another topic and I don't want to lead off track.

Here's where my creative side attempts to give you an analogy to understand the relationship between your desktop and in game.

    http://coewww.rutgers.edu/classes/mae/mae488/hw/lectures/adv_connect/rack_pinion.gif

As you can see moving your cursor on desktop is indeed related to how you rotate in game, For every FOV there's only one speed/ sensitivity that is actually 1:1 with your aspect ratio (allowing the gears to mesh perfectly).
As in this example given that the gears interlock perfectly as the gear rotates over the pinion it's clear they move in unison, 1:1 movement. That relationship is outlayed in my previous posts.

Here's another example that I'll attempt to explain why IT IS possible to match ALL FOV 1:1.

    http://www.f-lohmueller.de/pov_anim/engineering/Bike_Chain_043cb.gif

As you can see we have two gears of dissimilar diameters (simulating different FOV). They both rotate at different speeds, however the chain travels around them at uniform speed, clearly.

It does not matter how big the gear/FOV is or how many times it rotates. What matters is that the 'chain' moves between the two perfectly. Essentially adjusting your speed/sensitivity at the desired FOV so the 'gears' match the chain speed PERFECTLY.

Answering the above question then YES, it can be perfect. Perfect does not mean every pixel on your screen should move in sync regardless of FOV. That's physically impossible. Different diameters will complete a rotation at different times. The centre of your screen can be perfect and that's the only bit that matters, that's the only part of the screen you used to line up your shots.

Moving to your next target is simply a matter of distance / time, the better you judge this the faster you become.

you need to consider the actual design of your mouse skates as well if your using a softer pad like the ARTISAN 'soft'.
For example, larger skates will distribute pressure over a larger area, making the pad able to resist more downward force relative to how far the skates will 'dig' in. Some of the new mice come with skates that are really small and will do the exact opposite. Another factor with a really soft pad is the bottom of your mouse, if your skates are 1mm thick then you will understand as you play the bottom of the mouse will also rub on the pad more. If you have thicker skates, they will simply dig in more and create further resistance.

Again, all this really depends if you can always play with a light hand. I cant, so it's not for me.

A quick note on the GSR, the surface is really slick, it allows your hand to glide over the pad just as well as the mouse. A PLUS in my books. I hated the GSR originally (the very high static friction) however i started using my favorite 'cleaner' on it. Mr Sheen, it contains all kinds of chemicals that make things shiny and repel dust! You just spray a LITTLE on a microfiber cloth and wipe it over. You will instantly see it feels completely different, i actually use this on all my pads.

DNAMTE reacted to Drimzi in How to calculate correct aperture for lower FOV games.
Yes, you have to maintain 16:9 aspect ratio. If you just reduce horizontal, then your cropping vision without zooming the game out. In CSGO, black bars on the sides does nothing to the focal length. The whole point is to make it zoom out so CSGO and OW have the same focal length.

Example from a previous post. Both games had the same focal length, but different fov. The bigger the aperture, the bigger the fov. You can manipulate aperture downwards, but going upwards requires a larger monitor.

0.5mm racquet tape and double sided tape, stuff is meant to be super grippy and sweat resistant. It now feels amazing, honestly.

Got the Logitech G PRO Wireless to try out.

Thoughts so far after a few days, good shape and size (feels a little small but i'm used to the rival 310 shape right now). The feet seem very similar to the Steel Series Rival 600, they are very loud and have little initial friction, decent glide. For comparison the Rival 310 has a much smoother, almost silent glide, but more initial friction. Overall I feel the feet on this are better.
In my experience, as with mouse pads.... The more consistent you can make 'glide' feel, the better...  If you need to lower the overall 'slickness' of the glide to obtain less starting friction I'm all for it. It's like i explained with mouse pads, i feel manufactures could really spend time to look in to improving them, the slickest, smoothest surface does not necessarily give the smoothest, most consistent glide.

The buttons, scroll wheel and clicks, overall quality as usual from Logitech, feel great. This is also the lightest mouse i own, coupled with wireless... feels amazing.
Overall i'm really liking this mouse, i don't see any real negatives at this point, Great job Logitech!

PS: The side buttons are in a better location for me as well, my thumb sits right in between the buttons how i hold this mouse. The steel series 310 felt like the buttons are slightly too far forward for where i grip it (Steel series 600 was actually perfect).
Also as an update on the Rival 600, i had to return it as the Lift of distance was changing randomly, to the point i would lose tracking during a game. Also the shape was not perfect, i did not have a great solid hold with the mouse, mainly because of the right side and the lack of geometry.

If your trying to match between games and using the same FOV.... 360 distance results in a perfect match to get your hipfire... If your looking to set your zooms individually then it comes down to personal preference. Viewspeed, 0%, 56%, 100%... test them out and see what you like.

I personally didn't like the G403 shape, it also has crappy glide on standard feet. It might be an all rounder but it's not close to the best I've handled. I personally found the EC2 -A to be a far superior shape to the G403. I also much preferred the FK series to the EC series. Personally, i like the FK 1+ the most, you can hold it more traditionally and it has really good sides for grip. The FK2 is way too small IMO, certainly a fingertip grip.
Honestly the rival 310 needs a different material on the grips and its damn near perfect. When your hands are dry it grips amazingly well, but any moisture and it gets really slippery. If it had some 'comfort grooves' in the M1 + M2 buttons and a grippier material - #1 mouse easily IMO.
For the record the Rival 600 material does the opposite, you get a better grip once your hand warms up, however it is not as well designed on the right side as the rival 310 and you need to grip it harder. If your a high sens player it might not matter, but for me i need to pick up the mouse a lot and i really appreciate good geometry like the FK series and the Rival 310.
Right now id rate the FK1+ and the Rival 310 as the top two. It sways in favor to the FK simply because there's no issues with grip under any condition.

Picked up a Steelseries Rival 600.

First impressions,  it feels great, the design is very good. I've been using the Rival 310 as my main for some time now, and it's been a great mouse, my favorite out of EVERYONE i have tried. My only concern with the Rival 310 is the rubber sides, the rubber is soft and does not give a SOLID grip and can feel too slick. The Rival 600 has a much thinner, firmer feeling material which at this stage seems better, i will update in due time if my opinion changes.
The scroll wheel also feels extremely good on the Rival 600, one of the best. All the buttons feel great and despite what others say, the left and right clicks are perfectly fine, much better in comparison to a Zowie EC or FK click.
One of the main changes i notice is the mouse feet. They are noisy when gliding, you would think that means they have more resistance, but they don't. In fact one of the stand out features of the Rival 310 was how nicely it glides, this glides even better.
I'll leave my thoughts here, let the honeymoon period settle and report back when I've found some issues? hopefully not.

Ask anyone who takes prescription glasses, what it's like when they first put them on, or when they changed to a new prescription from an old prescription. Some will tell you everything looks distorted and 'wrong', ask them in a few hours. everything will be normal.
This happens because your eyes don't see, they just project information to your brain, your brain is what makes the image and allows you to 'see'. You might be aware of all the people who get a feeling of disconnect in reality after spending too much time in a VR headset, their brain has begun to 're wire' itself accordingly.
An 18" and a 27" are both reasonably sized to be positioned an arms length away without any dramas, a 50" might give you issues because parts of the screen will simply be too far in to your outer peripheral view and a 2" is going to give you issues without putting a magnifying glass in-front of it.
My point is, your brain is designed to work synergystically with your eyes and every other part of your body. Changing viewing distance by an inch will take you less than 5 seconds to adjust. I think sensitivity should be based on whats inside the little black box (monitor) and let your brain take care of your physical self, that's something it specialises in.
Ultimately your trying to squeeze 120 degrees virtual FOV in to what is? 30-40? degrees of actual viewspace from your eye. Something that your brain adapted to a long time ago. (and something that gives 'non gamers' a headache just trying to watch).

When you go to the cinemas... do you like to watch from 5 feet away with a 50' screen>? You need to keep things relative.... If i have a 27" 1440p 16:9 monitor or a 50 foot 1440p 16:9 cinema screen... if they are both using the same resolution / aspect ratio then i would want the EXACT same sensitivity. I would expect i am not sitting the same distance from each screen.
As a competent human being you should be able to position your head in front of your screen so that it fits in to your 'view space' perfectly. Sensitivity should not be based on SPATIAL AWARENESS, I'm sure one can understand your thumb is not larger than the empire state building even though you can block out the sun with your thumb...
The ONLY time the actual calculative sensitivity needs to be altered is if your monitor size / aspect ratio remains the same BUT the pixels per inch changes. For example a 27" 1080p 16:9 monitor vs a 27" 1440p 16:9 monitor, the latter has a higher density of pixels that will affect how the mouse moves across the desktop.

Heres something to consider. Take this example:

Putting alternate theory aside for a second and lets look at zoom factor. Essentially we are going to multiply the 45' 'viewspace' by 4.64, thereby filling up the 125' viewspace'. Now we have two arcs with equal chord length, however the expanded 45' viewspace does not share the same geometry as the 125' viewspace. The 125' arc is 1.1966 times longer.
Point being even when we have a FOV over two and a half times larger, the actual arc length differential can be minimal.
Ultimately even before we figure out exactly how far the apple drops from the tree, ALL FOV are scaled in some correlated way to fill the same size screen.

EDIT. WIP... thought I'd add this diagram here if anyone would find it useful. The numbers between dimensions are ratios.
